Laser Treatment
The most common type of laser treatment used for Port-Wine Stain birthmarks is pulsed dye laser treatment. The laser is held against the child's skin surface and sends a beam of light to the skin. This light goes less than 1mm into the skin. It's absorbed by the blood vessel right under the surface, causing it to heat up. This heat damages the blood vessels and creates a bruise which fades within a week or two. This lightens the overall color of the birthmark by damaging the dilated blood vessels under the skin causing the Port-Wine Stain.
Camouflage Make-up
You can get a prescription for a special kind of make-up that is designed to cover up and disguise birthmarks. The charity Changing Faces runs the skin camouflage service and you can book appointments with trained volunteers who teach you to apply the make-up.
