These birthmarks are usually a brown or tan color and can be found anywhere on the body. They usually appear at birth and sometimes increase in number as the child gets older, however if there are too many, and they are larger than 1.5cm, this could be a sign of neurofibromatosis (a genetic disorder that causes abnormal cell growth of nerve tissues).

Mongolian Spots

Mongolian spots are flat, bluish patches, usually found on the lower back. They are most commonly found on children of Asian, African, American Indian, Hispanic, and Southern European heritage. These birthmarks are not usually permanent, they tend to fade and disappear as the child ages.

Large red/purple patches usually found on the face, neck, arms, or legs. They can be any size and grow as the person does. Port-Wine Stain birthmarks are permanent and never go away without treatment and tend to darken as the person ages.
